A landmark bilateral agreement between Austria and Brazil on social security came into force on March 1, 2026. Originally signed in Brasilia on May 17, 2022, the agreement prevents double social insurance contributions, coordinates pension entitlements, and determines which country’s social security law applies to cross-border workers.
Confirmed by both the Austrian Social Ministry and Deloitte Austria, Brazilian insurance periods are now counted toward Austrian pension entitlements — and vice versa. Workers posted from Austrian companies to Brazil may remain in the Austrian social security system for up to 60 months. The agreement applies to both employees and self-employed persons in either direction and helps avoid double pension insurance contributions.
